The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Sees Significant Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
