The former Brazilian president detained after being considered a risk of fleeing

The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a armed takeover in September and sentenced more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.

His son, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, causing him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. The current president was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him participating in the 2026 national vote.
